“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. ” – 1 John 4:4 (NASB)
If there is anything that is certain it is positively certain that we can do nothing on our own to overcome the onslaught of the devil in our lives. Because we believe by faith and confess Jesus the Son of God as our Savior and Lord, we have a target on us. The devil is a committed enemy and hates us. His only goal is to destroy us and makes us ineffective. Like the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, some end up shipwrecked. The third implication of the double truth that Christ came to destroy our sinning and to forgive our sins is this: Christ will really help us in our fight. He really will help us. He is on our side. He didn’t come to destroy sin because sin is fun. He came to destroy sin because sin is fatal. It is a deceptive work of the devil, and it will destroy us if we don’t fight it. Jesus is alive, Jesus is almighty, Jesus lives in us by faith. And Jesus is for us, not against us. He will help you in your fight with sin in the new year. Trust him.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12 (ESV)
In the Old Testament the coming age of Messiah was prophesied to be a time when the Lord God would be a light for His people (Isaiah 60:19–22) as well as for the whole earth (Isaiah 42:6; 49:6). This is the second “I am” statement. Previously Jesus declared Himself “I am the Bread of Life.” John used the “light” metaphor for Jesus in John 1:4; “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” The promise is for those who will follow the Light of the World. Follow Jesus and we will not walk in darkness. Follow Jesus and we will have the Light of Life because that is what Jesus is. Follow Jesus and have Jesus himself as our light in this life. We follow by knowing and understanding the Bible and what it teaches us about life. The promises of God come to life in the light of the world, Jesus Christ, Savior and Lord. Some choose to ignore this lite and remain in darkness because in truth, without Christ in our lives, there is only spiritual darkness. Let’s walk in the Light by choosing in faith to follow the Light of Life, Jesus our Savior.
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” John 14:27 (NASB)
Jesus, when he was nearing the time of His arrest, illegal trials and Roman crucifixion demanded by the mob, spent some hours with the twelve who He appointed as Apostles. He promised them (and us) many things and taught them (and us) even more. He knew they did not yet comprehend and that soon they would flee in terror confused and deeply saddened. So he says, I have something I am leaving with you. It is my peace to settle your heart. It is like no peace you have ever found on this earth. Peace is the third of the first three fruit of the spirit. Love, Joy and now Peace. Jesus is the source for all of those. When our lives demonstrate Love and Joy and Peace because of our obedience to His teaching we are producing the fruit of the Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit of God within us that gives us the desire and the ability and the power to overcome the most difficult times and respond with Peace in our hearts. Why? Because Jesus has left it there for us. He faced some very difficult moments soon after so He knew what He said.
